In the 1980s a theoretical shift of focus occurred in critical social theory from analyses of material commoditization to significatory commoditization, from subject positioning seen within material relations to subjects positioned in symbolic relations.

Television and the child is one such discourse. This present archeology of discourse will m a p transformations in the ways "authorities of delimitation" have constructed the child in relation to TV. By locating "fields of emergence"—investigating how and where ideas about this relationship developed—I will identify those discursive (trans)formations that gave rise to knowledges about the televiewing child in general, and the media-literate in particular. H o w different concepts of the televiewing child m a p p e d the subject on "grids of specification" will be outlined.

The European child—that is, male child—during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries emerged as a learner and a sexual being within pedagogical discourses, social practices, and educative techniques. By the eighteenth century, concern over children and adolescents had generated "innumerable institutional devices and discursive strategies" (Foucault, 1980a:30) with which to observe and control the young. Another more recent discourse constituting the h u m a n subject concerns the quantification of the individual as part of a populace.
