Hughes and Hurston traveled north together, visiting Tuskegee Institute, founded by Booker T. Washington, in Tuskegee, Alabama; rushing over to Macon, Georgia, to catch a performance of the legendary blues singer Bessie Smith; and visiting the isolated, rural black churches.
